There is something magical about Pondicherry. It's an open secret that one of the primary inspirations behind Naturma is this beautiful location in South India. Its a town that I have visited innumerable times over the past 20 years. My first visit was as a 20 year old way back in 1998. As a student (on a limited budget) I had taken a cross-country train first to Bangalore and then to Pondi - a 24 hour journey that was both a magical and terrifying experience (I was new to travelling by train in India!) and with every passing hour the anticipation grew as to what lay in store for me. On arrival we checked into Park Guest House, a charming establishment run by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, that faces the sea and is fronted by a beautiful, curated open garden.
Soon after, we visited the main compound of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, a place for tranquil and silent meditation. To say this was a life-changing experience is probably an understatement. When I started on this journey of self-enquiry and self-knowledge, I never realised the profound impact it would have on my life - it has led me on the most rewarding roller coaster ride. But at the root of this journey has always been the underlying aspiration to live more consciously.
Naturma is a product of this aspiration - conscious living is at the heart of what we do on a day to day basis. We aspire to create products that are socially and environmentally aware, all natural, using, as far as possible, certified organic ingredients and handmade with love.
Pondicherry, with its quaint colonial architecture, wide boulevards, rolling esplanade played an important part in this journey. The low hung trees and bright hibiscus flowers meet you at every turn and the scent of jasmine and incense often hang in the air. Being in the atmosphere of the Ashram, its residents and the inspiring people of the township Auroville - a true experiment in human unity where a community of seekers has come together from all over the world to live together and work consciously for a better world - has inspired us with a vision for work, life and business. Integral, conscious living is the future, with all the positive change that comes with it and this is Naturma's raison d'etre.
